just felt like starting another topic



you sure know about this.. you're in japan with family/friends, doing stuff like visiting some places, eating delicous food, walking through malls etc.



and there are always people around you, so when you talk to your friends in public about ya.. funny things you won't do it in japanese, right? Because it might be embarrassing when someone hears it, right? <img src='http://www.halvsie.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blush21.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />



for example there's a nice girl you wanna talk about and such <img src='http://www.halvsie.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blush21.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />



and pretty much vice versa when i hang around with my hafu friends in germany



but I assume british/american hafus don't really feel like that.. cause english's an international language and even in japan almost everyone will understand you.

Actually, most people in Japan won't understand enough of what you're saying to be able to follow the conversation. Particularly if you talk fast or have a heavy accent. The only problem is that it's hard to tell who *does* understand you.

Well, I can tell you that absolutely no one in Japan understands Swedish, so yeah I totally get what you're saying about the secrecy..

If I'm speaking to someone who understands Kiwi English really well then I speak mumbly and with a strong accent and hope no-one gets it...

My teenagers have their own secret code. It is a strange mixture of wierd Japanese/English, anime-style, funny accent thing going and I have no idea what they are saying. It is not just the teen thing, it's an "American teens in Japan who have studied a few years of Japanese and incorporated it into their teen anime/video game/popular Japanese culture world" subculture. You'll understand if you see their Face Book walls or listened to their conversations. It gets scary when I ask them to translate. Oh, my poor head.

mmm i do speak in Japanese with my sis, mother and haafu friends here cause its a good practice..but its true that i used it also to talk "undercover'..



now..when i am in Japan, i am pretty sure noone undesrtands Greek so... I can say ANYTHING!! problem is i usually dont have anyone to talk with in Greek..unless i m on business... but..its no fun cause we only talk about business <img src='http://www.halvsie.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

This reminds me of something that happened to me and my friend on the train last summer in Tokyo. We were coming home from a night out and ended up getting really lost. Since our destination was a fairly small train station, no one was able to help us find our way and we had been subway hopping for a few hours. We were on a fairly crowded subway muttering obscenities and complaining ("We're fucking lost as shit...Ew, I just touched that guy's sweaty back.") for a few minutes when some random guy (in perfect, clear English) asks, "Alright...do you guys need help or something?"

I am blesses i can speak in Greek and have NOBODY understand me in Japan..

however..when I am in Germany -either on flight connection or traveling- i have had many similar accidents cause there are just so many Greeks in Germany...



so..in Europe I use Japanese as my "Secret" language and in Japan, Greek...

This "secret language" is actually coming in pretty handy at the workplace this week. Basically, my company has gone through a lot of turmoil lately and now a few non-bilingual people have been placed into our office by our parent company. We have some visitors this week from Japan that came to visit the new team, but after a couple days one of the visitors from Japan asked for a meeting with my boss and me where he complained how he has no faith in these new hires. Funny thing is that it wasn't even in a closed conference room, just at a table in the main walkway where the people he's talking crap about are walking right around us the entire time. Hope none of them actually understand Japanese and just failed to tell us...

We just had a sudden influx of Japanese-speakers into our building (the space next to my team was open and a team moved in). The president of that group is a halvsie, too. Should make things interesting haha

Icelandic is pretty useful as a secret language in Japan, I wouldn't trust it in Europe, though...
