Definition of Maru
#1
Wondering if anyone can shed light of the definition of Maru...

I've an idea it can mean a multitude of things, but I'm particularly interested in ships...

Our old friend wikipedia says maru....丸, means "circle" and Nippon Maru was Hideyosji's flagship.... with circle being a reference to castles.....

Some one told me that "west" maru in a castle might be where a daimyo's/shogun's son might be kept... I assumed this means kept within the western walls or bailey of a castle????

And nowadays when you mention maru, people would automatically think of a small boat, may be a fishing boat, owned by one guy..... ie all by itslf and not in a fleet?

Any ideas people?

it depends on how it's used in a sentence and what the kanji is. japanese is a complex language. a lot of Japanese words have several meanings. even particles.

Says here that there are several theories, none of them proven.

I don't know if Greenhorn can read Japanese Si <img src='http://www.halvsie.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Hapadeity...condescending much? Pretty much every language is complex in different ways - if not the writing system, then the grammar or pronunciation and I think GH knows that, otherwise, uh, he wouldn't be asking for clarification.

and it depends also how the people look. how they cough. which styles they have. all the IN sayings. the way you disscredit down a person. how they behave, an this is different in every german area.

and the real germans and austrians/swiss are quite dangerouse... somtimes they say nothing at all. and especially the austrians can be really cruel. <img src='http://www.halvsie.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dry.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='<_<' /> <img src='http://www.halvsie.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/happy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='^_^' />

No, not that many, just a bunch of advice on how to be an alpha male like yourself to pad things out. Good job restraining yourself there.

ANYWAY -maru is often just a suffix commonly put onto the end of male names (mostly old-fashioned, I think), and also boats.

Cheers Sasa.... glad to have you in my corner so to speak, I'll get my Japanese expert to decypher.

I'm one on many unfortunate Halvsies, who grew up in less enlightenned time, when my Father believed that kids cannot assimilate two languages at once or would end up pidgin English or the Japanese equivalent...

*Written* Japanese is actually the most complex language in the world. No other language mixes 2 different alphabets and then adds pictographs into the mix. Spoken Japanese, on the other hand, is no more complex than most other languages.

@hapadeity: actually... english is the most complex language in the world <img src='http://www.halvsie.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' />

japanese is only hard writing... and then again, so is chinese....

but anyway... back to maru!

I'm not entirely sure how it ended up with so many different meanings and how they all evolved. Honestly, I hadn't really even thought about it till now <img src='http://www.halvsie.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blush21.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Blush' /> etymology is pretty interesting like that
