I have never been to Japan and don't really understand Japanese but some words here and there but I would think that could be irritating but I did work in a Japanese Restaurant when younger and the owner of the place use to yell at me to get something from the back, in Japanese, which confused me because I don't look it. I would yell back "Michi".... English!

Interesting topic, it happened to me sometimes in Japan, but maybe not as often as to others. but I think it occurs mostly in rural areas. I usually talk back in Japanese when it happens.

The opposite happens to me in the states.
I'll be at like Olive Garden or something and the waiter or waitress will speak really slowly.
Its obnoxious, but that's what I get for living in a 98% white community.

That's because you're in Roppongi or Shibuya, which are full of foreigners who don't speak Japanese (and perhaps even expect the waiters to speak English), and the restaurants are staffed by people who chose to work there so they could interact with those foreigners, and are thus super-eager to speak English.
Get yourself out to someplace like Adachi-ku, and you can enjoy all the Japanese chitchat you want. <img src='http://www.halvsie.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='B)' />
And no, I don't get offended by a matter of three or four words by someone who just has good intentions.

It's not you. These are Olive Garden employees. That's how they normally speak. <img src='http://www.halvsie.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
