Glee
#1
Okay, we've been watching the TV show, Glee (first caught it because it was on after So You Think You Can Dance, but turns out it's actually kinda charming) and for the most part, we've enjoyed it (though I wish the actors would actually sing their part instead of really badly lipsynching), but last night's episode had a tidbit that bothered me. The main dude's wife, who I know is supposed to be a bit of a biatch and all, made the comment that marrying Ken Tanaka (who is a halvsie!) would result in the, and I'm paraphrasing here, "introduction of a bunch of genetic diseases due to his ethnic fondue pot."

Okay, I understand that it was meant to be an asinine comment from her, but it felt really out of place and there was no reaction to the comment. I expected there to be at least some sort of, "Hey! That's not nice!" sort of reaction, but the show just moved on like it was nothing. I know 99% of the people watching probably didn't even notice (hell, most probably didn't even realize he wasn't full Japanese until then), but swap out the comment with any other racial comment towards whites, blacks, hispanics, etc and there'd probably be an uproar.

Wow. Not only is that just not funny, it's very WRONG. <img src='http://www.halvsie.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Alright, to be honest, it was *supposed* to be mean and petty of her to say, but it just felt really random. There's another character that makes all sorts of inappropriate comments about everyone and everything under the sun, so if the comment came from her, it would have been totally natural. While the character who actually said it is supposed to be mean and petty, it felt really out of place. Replace that comment with something like, "Besides, you wouldn't want to marry a black man," or something like that, and you'd have seen people getting really upset.

It wasn't *that* big of a deal, but just felt like it should be mentioned <img src='http://www.halvsie.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' />

I think what bothers me most about this is that most people wouldn't catch it and/or find it offensive.

I SAW THAT! I was actually thinking the same thing, that statement actually doesn't even make sense...

Also, I actually didn't even realize he was Japanese at all until when a few episodes back, they said his name was Ken Tanaka and I got really excited and realized he was a haafu. Too bad he's not that attractive and sort of a lame character to be represented by... <img src='http://www.halvsie.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dry.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='<_<' />

I think if the cheerleading coach said it, it would have been hilarious. But it just seemed out of place coming from the wife. =\

I don't know, I hated the character of the wife from the start. By the way, went back and looked. The quote was: "..Marry Ken Tanaka, oh sure he's dumb like sand, and his fondue pot of nationalities is going to open up your kids to a host of genetic diseases..."

WE ARE GENETICALLY SUPERIOR GOD DAMMIT. Not even in a stuck up way, literally, genetic diversity is a good thing.

just wanted to point out that i'm pretty sure full blooded people would be offended by what you said.in my opinion, statements like above are no better than what white supremacists say.

it's good to be proud of who you are but saying we are genetically superior because we are mix is asinine.

no one needs to reply since im not looking for a meaningless forum debate, as a person from the real world using real life logic,i'm just saying what needed to be said.

...Hahaha I thought it was clear that I was kidding. Sorry if you couldn't tell, I don't actually think we're superior. However, genetic diversity is a good thing nonetheless and the statement made in Glee was completely nonsensical.
