Oscars 09
I'm usually not that fond of the kind of movies that win a lot of Oscars. But since I'm bored, I like discussing movies, and speculation in general, I thought I would start this thread.

What movies, actors and directors do you think will win this year?

Who do you think deserves to win? Maybe a movie you thought was great, but didn't get nominated..

Does it influence your opinion of a film if you hear that it has won an oscar? Does it make you more inclined to want to see it?

This is a list of this years nominees in the major categories:

Best Motion Picture of the Year
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
The Reader
Slumdog Millionaire

Entre les murs (2008)(France)
Revanche (2008)(Austria)
Okuribito (2008)(Japan)
Vals Im Bashir (2008)(Israel)

I have only seen a few of these films so it's hard for me to say who deserves to win. But from the speculation in the media it seems like Slumdog millionaire and Kate Winslet are the biggest favorites in their respective categories.
I'm a bit surprised that Robert Downey Jr got nominated. I think he's a good actor, but I didn't think Tropic Thunder was that special, a pretty average comedy imo. And surely not the best performance of his career.

Has anyone seen the Japanese film Okuribito that is nominated in the best foreign language category?
Oooh, Taddres, starting a new topic!

I liked the Reader, Kate was pretty good. Also liked Slumdog Millionaire.

Hearing it's nominated doesn't influence whether I see it though.
So... It went pretty much as expected, I think..

The only half surprise was that Sean Penn won for best actor, after all the praise Mickey Rourke has been getting for the Wrestler.

Was fun to see that there was two Japanese winners. Yojiro Takita won best foreign language film for Okuribito, and Kunio Kato won best animated short film for Tsumiki no Ie. I thought Kato's acceptance speech was pretty funny.
its one the few times that I pretty much agree with the results!! especialy for Penn... he totally deserved it...
Not caring in California..

However, I have to agree with the soundbite of Kato...heard it on the radio the day after the seemingly(?) endless hype on tv about the friggin' ceremonies.
