Hmm.. the forum didn't like me writing Japanese in Opera..

The problem is, my XP IE6 won't let me

read this thread. It gives me a blank page as "completed". By looking at the source for the page, I

can see that it had no trouble downloading it, so it must be the browser <img src='http://www.halvsie.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Your Japanese

shows up fine on my computer.

As for the topic, this is my crappy translation:

"For those who

would like to write Japanese, let this be the place to do it.

Well well, in a recent story a Ropongi

Hills resident died because of an automatic revolving door. Every which way you think about it, society... (I

don't understand the rest of the sentence). This accident could have been easily prevented if the sensor had

been correctly installed... (once again, I don't really understand the rest of the sentence). Japan is a

place that is easily "rocked" by a... (bah, forget it, I'm a crappy

interpreter)."

Damn, my

恥ずかしいぃ~。。。。。

To add

to Nez's translation, with my very very poor Japanese ability, as I got it, number9 thinks society is

overreacting and that it was a single case, since it happened because the door of the Roppongi Hills (I suppose

the newly built center), stopped during reconstructioning or something?!

But it actually doesn't make

sense, what I wrote, so maybe number9 himself could....*ahem*... pleeeeeease?! <img src='http://www.halvsie.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/whistling.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':wait:' />

I saw an article on the frontpage of the asahi, but after looking

at the picture and reading it over very quickly, but was to lazy to read it properly.

But if I remember

correctly, we had a little child squashed in a door in Germany, I just tried to find an article, but

haven't suceeded yet. I'll keep on searching...

Nez, you're using a mac with direct input?

Yeah,

I'm using a Mac but the reason for my funny encoding is my cursed web browser Safari. Safari has some real

issues with text input because when I post a message on Yahoo groups, the message is displayed with some really

weird formatting.

I've decided that for inputting Japanese from my Mac, I'm going to use Camino

because

When I

try to write Japanese in XP+Opera, I get this:

?????????????

Actually, what I wrote in my edited

English post originally was that... the attention of the Japanese public has completely shifted over to Iraq

now. Japanese mass media and public are very similar to America in that they tend to only focus on one issue at

a time.

But it came out all garbled so I edited to complain about my browser environment. I guess I gotta

try Netscape or something...

As for my original post. That's more or less what I wrote. Along with

the line of thought that what the media and public should be focusing on is to ensure there's proper sensor

requirements (industry regulation, likely) that ensure that the entire revolving door space is covered by the

sensors, not just the top and bottom. Instead, everyone's panicking and even removing revolving doors from

future buildings that are still under construction or planning (the building owner can make it mandatory

for the sensors to cover 100%, and after this incident the door makers should be ensuring this anyways... but

maybe it's still bad publicity to have "deathly revolving doors"... but I doubt the Japanese

public would care about it 3 years in the future with a new building opening in 2007.)

We learn in

engineering that different countries value human life differently. In Australia, we value human lives very

highly so safety is paramount. I think Japan isn't a country renowned for its safety. Safety costs money and

that would mean a blow to the economy.

If the Japanese government really cared about safety, they'd

have a strong anti-smoking campaign. Do Japanese cigarette packets have the manditory warning labels (eg:

"Smoking causes cancer") like the US and Australia?

OK, I

can still read the topic with my sister's computer...

They have some kind of: "Let's not

smoke too much, because it's not soooo good for your health, alright?!" sentences on the packets. I

had to laugh in the subway, when I saw a cigarette ad and read the sentence for the first time.

and Yuriko says her Japanese is crap, that makes me feel great. <img src='http://www.halvsie.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Don't be sad! Those Kanji are wicked! But since I feared you might get sad, I logged in with

my sister's computer in order to submit you the kanji readings! <img src='http://www.halvsie.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/happy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='^_^' />

Anata no kenkou wo sokonau osore ga arimasu node suisugi ni chuuni

shimashou!

I hope the readings are correct... (=> "Because it might be possible that it could

not be good for your health, let's take care not to smoke too much" or something...)

We have

those big black framed warnings on cigarette packets recently in Germany, among the usual warnings like

"Smoking kills!" "Smoking causes cancer!", etc. are new ones:

"Smoking

let's your skin age faster!"

"Smoking harms your sperms and fertility!"

and

more... <img src='http://www.halvsie.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

If Western governments really cared about safety, they'd make cigarettes illegal. But

that doesn't happen. Is it because of all the taxes on cigarettes? <img src='http://www.halvsie.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Tongue' />

I suggest

Yuriko and Nez should be the offical translators of this forum. You could translate everything written in

Japanese to either romaji or English, preferably to both.
