Guess there's not much anime lover in this forum. Hehehe. While cowboy bebop was awesome I found the disappearance of haruhi Suzumiya to be rather anti climatic. Not to mention disappointing after the torture that is endless eight. Grr. Anyways, ouran is enjoyable I guess, for me the most memorable of ouran was the opening "kiss kiss fall in love!"

Maeku-san, I used to watch Candy Candy too when i was small (although it was shoujo), It always air before Doraemon in Indonesia. I also watched rose of Versailles, Nobody's Boy: Remi (what a tear jerker) the original Macross, Saint Seiya. I never watched Touch but i read all Adachi Mitsuru's manga which include touch. and i grew up reading a lot of showa era manga like ashita no joe. I think i started watching anime and reading manga when i was 2 years old and never grew out of it, except for a couple of years in highschool and a couple of year in uni when i thought that i had become too old for most (even then i was still following mainstream ones, one piece and naruto)

Used to watch a lot more anime than I do now, but I think after the anime explosion about a decade ago, it just got over-saturated and so many anime kept reusing imagery, themes, etc from other anime that it became this closed-loop, self-referential genre. Suppose that's to be said about anything that has a very active and highly vocal fanbase, though.
That being said, anime peaked, for me, with Cowboy Bebop. Had that perfect blend of serious and ridiculous, was well-acted, great story, and amazing soundtrack. I haven't quite found an anime series that has lived up to it since (granted, I haven't been actively looking). I've heard good things about Samurai Champloo, for example, but haven't ever really gotten around to watching it.
Manga, on the other hand, I enjoy much more. My biggest guilty pleasure right now is One Piece (it's dumb, but it can be friggin' amazing at times - never watched the anime, though), but I also follow Berserk, Fairy Tail, and a few random ones here and there. I used to love Berserk (anime was pretty crappy though), but the publishing schedule is so damn slow that it's hard to stay excited for the series. I collected Gantz until about issue 18, but gave up on the series. The start was so different and interesting that I wanted to see where it went, but it soon dawned on me that the writer had no idea what he wanted to do with the story, so it wandered all over the place (and even copied characters from video games and other manga).
edit: Oh, and I too used to watch a lot of old school anime. It's great for nostalgia, but man, going back and watching old anime is just brutal. It's so bad haha

I couldnt read Japanese but I used to watch the sketches and draw..thats how I started sketching manga I think.. what a waste..i should have started learning kanji at a much earlier age.. I feel so old and i fell that I learn one kanji and forget 2 at the same time.... <img src='http://www.halvsie.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ph34r.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I actually learned a lot of my Japanese reading from reading manga haha
It helped to know the context of what you were reading because you know the story; you also have pictures sort of explaining what's going on. Much easier than reading novels. Not to mention that as a kid, I was much more interested in manga and games, so I was motivated to learn how to read! I plan on doing the same with my offspring haha

I've never been a big anime otaku, but being able to stream tons of Japanese anime with English sub-titles on Hulu has got me watching some shows now and it's amazing how much new vocabulary I've learned from watching episodes of Naruto, Death Note and Bleach. Since I hate the typical Japanese "talent" shows, I guess this is my best option on keeping up with my Japanese.

Totally agree as I started watching it recently too. I'd avoided it for years because I wasn't a fan of the artwork, but once I got used to it I love the artwork since it's so unique. Luffy is a very refreshing character that goes against every stereotype that I'd come to expect from anime.

Well, i am at ep.270'ish right about now. At this point it's jes something to watch while eating or right before bed time. Actually 'tis the first anime series i've watched over these many eps, like ever!
Very good series yes and most characters are pretty unique. But i have to agree on the artwork. I am a big fan of the artwork. Best artwork i've seen so far is actually from a recent movie, the legend of the millenium dragon. <img src='http://www.halvsie.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=' ' />
I've heard that the new series of berserk will feature som decent drawings as well.
I am not nearly that well traversed into the anime world, ive watched a couple o ones so i dunno... Do you watch a lot of anime retishi?
